Tuks proved why they are the reigning Varsity Cricket champions when they beat UCT by nine wickets at the Ibbies Oval in Potchefstroom on Thursday.
Ruben Trumpelmann set the tone for the match when he opened the bowling and proceeded to catch Robert Koenig out in the second over off the bowling of Ruben de Swardt, with UCT struggling on 13/1.
Mphokuhle Dube and B Tattam steadied the ship for UCT, taking their side to the 10th over at a rate of just under a run-a-ball. However, Sean Gilson broke the partnership when he had Tattam caught at fine leg for 14.
Just a few overs later, he struck again, twice, as UCT slumped to 82/5. The Cape-based side just couldn’t get the scoreboard ticking and eventually ended on 124/7 with Gilson taking three wickets for just 11 runs. Dube’s 58 was the standout performance for the batting side.
Captain Neil Brand and Francois van Heerden opened the batting for Tuks and made their presence felt, scoring 48 and an unbeaten 44 runs respectively. Tuks went 100 up in the 12th over, and continued to cruise along to their 125-run target.
Poor fielding from UCT allowed Tuks to continue to find the boundaries, with Tuks smacking a four in the 13th over to win the game by nine wickets with plenty of time to spare.
