DUT Men’s Football have made history as they have qualified for their first ever Varsity Men’s Football competition. Playing an important piece in this solved puzzle for the Durban based team is their captain, Xolani Mkhonza, the first captain to lead DUT into the men’s Varsity Diski tournament.
Responding to this achievement, Mkhonza expressed his excitement on what lies ahead, mentioning that the leadership role does not faze him as he believes in teamwork and a shared responsibility amongst the team.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to play in the Varsity Football as I can say it's a dream come true. We have never stopped working hard and believing in ourselves that's why we are here today,” said Mkhonza.
“I believe in teamwork and I also believe that having each other's backs is what makes a team. Being a captain for me doesn't matter that much, so for me we are all captains.”
Despite being new to the competition the men from the east coast of Durban are already settling in and growing in confidence ahead of their debut season however, the captain has admitted that the traveling aspect may take a toll on the team as they are without a home game.
“I won't lie it (having no home game) is going to have an impact on us, especially traveling a lot can result in fatigue. But I hope and wish we can overcome all of that” he said
“Being considered as the first-timers or underdogs, everyone believes they will step over us so I think the pressure is more on them. There will be challenges but we hope we'll reach our goal of being in the finals” Mkhonza concluded.
