There is a lot left to play for with only one round left in the 2023 Men’s Varsity Football tournament. Next week log leaders UJ take on number two and defending champions TUT while UWC, VUT and NWU will vie for the other two semi-final spots.
Here are the players who impressed in round 6:
Thuso Mlamla (TUT)
Midfielder Thuso Mlamla was the standout performer in the encounter between TUT and UFH. He was controlling the middle of the park, defending more aggressively and making good defence-splitting passes to assist the TUT advance. He moved the ball quickly, which in some instances caught UFH defence napping. Another highlight of Mlamla’s game was a fantastic goal which he scored from outside the box.
Advocate Mokwena (UJ)
Advocate Mokwena had a brilliant game against UFS as together with Tumelo Molubi they controlled almost the entire 90 minutes of the game. He had a great impact on defence and attack, being the El Maestro for the Orange Army. He scored one goal, made three tackles including a goal-saving tackle and walked away with the player of the match award. He nearly had a brace after striking from the halfway line only to hit a crossbar.
Lehlohonolo Nkaekae (CUT)
Right winger Lehlohonolo Nkaekae had another busy evening on the park for his team. The self-proclaimed freekick specialist was a handful for the VUT defence to deal with, with sniping runs down the right, while he also put in some excellent through balls. Nkaekake came very close to equalising for his team with his shot from out wide hitting the top of the goal posts.
Oatlhotse Ditlhobolo (NWU)
Oatlhotse Ditlhobolo stood out with his exceptional ball handling, speed, in-swing and ball control in the match against UWC. Despite his impressive performance, his team suffered a loss. Ditlhobolo's skills and dedication however were a highlight of the game.
