Kovsies fuelled by home-ground advantage in Varsity Netball semi-final

Four-time champions UFS Kovsies are in familiar territory when they take on defending champions UP Tuks in the second semi-final of the 2024 Varsity Netball tournament on Monday 30 September at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein.

During the last bumper weekend, also in Bloemfontein, Kovsies beat Tuks 67-49 pushing the defending champions to the brink of elimination from this year’s competition.

Head coach Burta de Kock has however emphasized that it is important to stay grounded at this critical point.

“Anyone can make it to the final, so we focus on the task at hand. We won’t think about the final until we’ve earned our place. We push ourselves to be better, always working on what can take us from good to great.”

Kovsies have home-ground advantage and De Kock says they are very fortunate to be in this position.

“The fans are our extra player on the court. Their belief in us fuels our performance.”

Experience is a key factor in navigating this stage, and the Kovsies veterans are known for mentoring younger players. Among this year’s promising additions to the squad is 19-year-old Karla Victor.

“They’ve taught me to work harder and earn the right to wear the Kovsies badge,” Victor reflects. “Every training session feels like a match. I know that effort in practice will translate to success on the court.”

Other newcomers, such as Thando Mokoena and first-year student Owami Mohali, are also facing high expectations. “Discipline is everything,” says Mohali, mentioning her coach’s guidance. “Endurance, patience, and focus are lessons I’ve learned that apply not just to netball, but to life.”

The presence of Spar Protea captain Khanyisa Chawane and vice-captain Karla Pretorius as part of the Kovsies coaching team, has also been a great influence, says Mohali.

“Our coaches help us master all aspects of the game, making us versatile.” Victor adds, “Training isn’t just physical, the mental preparation is just as critical. Analysing every match, every move makes me better every day.”
