CUT raring to go in Varsity Women’s Football

A fast start will be key for the CUT Women’s Football as they make their return to the Varsity Women’s Football this season. The team from Bloemfontein will be playing in the competition for the first time since 2019, but they will be banking on their regional league form in the Free State. That said, there is certainly also a lot of excitement heading into the tournament in Tshwane.

CUT will kick-off their campaign in the opening match of the tournament at the TUT Stadium, and first up they will measure themselves against CPUT.

The coach, Lefu Mohapi, is confident that although they are making a return after five years, they have plans in place to start with three points.

“Every game is going to be important, but in the first game, that's where you've got to make your mark and a team or institution,” said Mohapi.

“CPUT are first time contenders in the tournament and we are confident that we can claim three points to start off with.

“We saw them playing at the USSA tournament and they are a very good side. Fortunately, we picked up pointers in watching their games, and we are confident that we have plans in place to win the game.

“Because the tournament is being played in a 'bubble' where all the teams are around and you can see your opponents in action and thus plan accordingly.”

The coach added that the ladies in the team are excited as this will be the first time they get to experience the tournament, but they will draw on their Sasol League form.

“The feeling from the ladies is very much one of excitement. They are willing and raring to go. We've prepared really well for the past few weeks, and fortunately, most of the players in our team play in the Sasol League, where we are also currently at the top of the league in the Free State.”
