Varsity Sports and kykNET have joined forces to launch a brand new choir competition. Varsity Sing premiers on kykNET on Thursday, 14 July 2016 and will see 12 university choirs battle it out over 13 weeks for top honours in university choral music.
“Varsity Sing will spice up Thursday nights from July this year,” says Francois Pienaar, CEO of ASEM. “TV audiences are going to be inspired and entertained by the best choirs in the country, who will take them on an exciting new musical journey. Expect a fusion of traditional, contemporary and original choral music in an impressive new showcase.”
The first four rounds, including the semi-finals of Varsity Sing, will be recorded in front of live audiences and broadcast from July to September. Varsity Sing will culminate in a live musical extravaganza on 13 October, where the Varsity Sing champions will be crowned.
“kykNET is very excited about this competition and the partnership with ASEM,” says Karen Meiring, M-Net Director, kykNET Channels. “Choir singing is one of the most performed art forms in the world and in South Africa we have excellent varsity choirs. Having them perform and compete on national television will take its popularity to the next level.”
