No matches will be played on Monday 17 September. The competition resumes on 24 September with the last round of matches before the semi-finals a week later.
According to Jana Arlow, Varsity Netball manager, the decision not to schedule any matches for 17 September was to support the university players and management. Ten players and two coaches participating in this year’s competition were chosen to represent the SA student team who will participate from 17 to 21 September in Kampala, Uganda.
Apart from South Africa the other participating countries are Kenya, Singapore, Zimbabwe, America, Namibia, Sri Lanka and Uganda. South Africa is in the same group as Namibia, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
Jenny van Dyk (Tuks) is the head coach and Elsunet du Plessis (NWU) the team manager. Du Plessis is a former national student player herself.
South Africa has a very good record at the WUNC. In 2012 in Cape Town they ended second and were the champions in America two years ago.
Apart from the players in Uganda, six Proteas in Australasia would also have missed this Monday’s matches. They are: Ine-Marí Venter (Tuks), Khanyisa Chawane, Meagan Roux (both Kovsies), Sigi Burger, Monique Reyneke and Romé Dreyer (all NWU).
