Things are about to heat up in Potchefstroom. And we’re not just referring to the on-field cricket action – as blistering as several performances have been. Nor are we referring to the sweltering weather. The Varsity Cheerleading Championships, proudly brought to you by Samsung and FNB, take place at Senwes Cricket Stadium in Potchefstroom during the Varsity Cricket tournament, with the winners being announce on Saturday, 30 January 2016.
While we all prepare for the annual JOOL party, taking place on Thursday 28 January 2016, with live performances from Valkenburg, Bok van Blerk, DJ Fresh, Karen Zoid and Francois van Coke at just R110 a ticket, our cheerleaders are making their way to Potchefstroom to entertain the crowd. This all takes place as we build up to their competition, as well as the final of 2016 Varsity Cricket, on Saturday.
“Our routine is a balance of dance, stunts and pyramids,” says NMMU Varsity Sports cheerleader manager Nicki Ann Rayepen. “Training is rigorous and the pressure is immense. Precision is key. We pride ourselves on working really hard, but there is also such a lovely team spirit.”
NMMU won the inaugural championships last year, and the question on everyone’s lips is whether they can retain the title. They’ll be up against NWU-Mafikeng, NWU-Potchefstroom, UP-Tuks, University of Johannesburg, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Vaal University of Technology and the University of the Free State.
The South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) will be judging the event. Tickets are R20 at the gate and include access to the Varsity Cricket games.
