Varsity Athletics is entering its fifth year in 2017. Adding Olympic athletes to the list of former participants and with the likes of Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya earning gold medals in Rio last year, the competition’s prestige is growing.
In 2017 the season will be comprised of two meetings – the first hosted by the University of Potchestroom on 3 March and the second on 31 March at the University of Pretoria’s newly-renovated stadium.
The high octane event will see athletes from 12 different universities compete in track and field events as Varsity Athletics cements its spot on the South African athletics calendar. The meetings are conducted under the rules of IAAF and ASA.
There will be an A-Division consisting of eight teams: UJ, Tuks, Pukke, Kovsies, Maties, UWC, Madibaz, TUT and a B-Division consisting of four teams: UCT, Limpopo, CUT and VUT. A winner of both meetings will be announced, as well as the overall winner, who will be crowned on 31 March in Pretoria.
