The University of the Western Cape managed a second bonus-point victory of their debut season on Monday night, as they put 59 past a struggling UJ.
The ladies from the north started the game as though it was a season-defining encounter, and with DJ Cessna’s music setting a tone of excitement, the spectators were in full voice at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre.
UJ’s orange army got the first point on the board, but a UWC side going from strength to strength looked rather composed. The score remained level on 1-1 to 8-8 and again 10-10, but UJ managed to open up a slight gap, ending the first quarter ahead by 15 to UWC’s 12.
Coach Janine du Doit’s words at the break seemed to work because a better looking Cape Town side quickly equaled scores, making it 20-20 in the middle of the second quarter. Eventually they took the lead as rather tired looking UJ could not respond.
The lead extended from 34-24 to 46-33 when the ladies went for their third break and UWC took advantage and managed to up the score to 56-35 in the early stages of the last quarter.
Comeback attempts from UJ almost drew the scores level, but the University of Johannesburg students left it too late. Despite adding an extra 10 points, UWC stood their ground and finished the game off on 59-46.
Their second victory of the Varsity Netball competition and second bonus point took them to a tally of 10.
