UWC earned some vital points in Port Elizabeth, where they saw off NMMU 2-1 at Madibaz Stadium in a heated affair which saw the hosts ending the match with 10 men.
The Madibaz started well, putting the visitors under pressure with some good movement and passing which saw UWC goalkeeper Reon October having to make a save early on.
However, it was Cape team who drew first blood, catching NMMU on the break in the 16th minute and forcing a penalty, which playmaker Tapelo Sixishe put past goalkeeper Lyndsay Jennings to make the score 0-1.
NMMU pushed to get back in but struggled to score despite putting the UWC defence under pressure and after 30 minutes the score remained 1-0 to UWC.
Just before half-time the Madibaz suffered a huge blow when Madibaz striker Cloudius Ray Sagandira, just back from injury, was given his marching orders for bad conduct.
Midfielder Lukhanyo Rasmeni put the home team back in the match half way through the second half when he broke through the UWC defence to give the hosts some hope of victory.
The Cape Town students left Madibaz stadium with their heads held high though as they secured the win through Reza Zain Dramat, who scored late to put the final nail in the coffin for NMMU by handing them their first home defeat since the competition’s inception.
