Football can be a cruel game. That is what we have learned from the semi-final round of the Varsity Football competition. There were tears of joy and sadness as CUT and UWC were eliminated by Pretoria giants UP-Tuks and TUT. Here is what we learned from the semi-final round.
Penalties are a sad way to decide a football game
What heartbreak for CUT. They were within touching distance of reaching their maiden Varsity Football final but fell at the final hurdle. The 6-5 shootout victory for TUT after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time, was a cruel way to bow out of the competition. But there could only be one winner on the day.
Tuks recorded back-to-back wins over UWC in a period of one week
Two games against UWC produced two successive wins for Tuks. They would have been wishing that they could play UWC week in and week out with a case of déjà vu. It’s been a great week for Tuks and they deservedly booked their ticket to the final.
The dream final is on
It took five years but it has finally happened. People have been talking up a Tshwane derby final and their wishes have finally been granted. It’s the first time in the history of the competition that two teams from the same city are clashing in the grand finale.
