NWU equaled their own and the competition record when they hammered the Vaal University of Technology 94-15 on Monday in a third round Varsity Netball match in Bloemfontein.
With neither team able to host matches, the match was played in the Callie Human Centre in the City of Roses.
In last year’s corresponding fixture, the goal difference was also 79 when the champs of 2015 and 2016 won by 93-14. It was one way traffic all the way, although NWU travelled without a couple of their players to give some of the others in the squad necessary game-time.
The pace was too much for VUT to handle, as they only managed 2 points in the opening quarter, as NWU raced to a 21-2 lead. NWU had all the momentum as Claudia van den Berg ensured the scoreboard ticked over with a clinical display at the net. Half time arrived with the score at 48-5 in NWU’s favour.
Just minutes into the third quarter NWU had already secured a bonus pint as Van den Berg took them past 50. VUT were slightly better at the net, but just couldn’t get a grip on the match.
A high scoring final quarter took NWU to a record-equaling 79-point gap between them and their opponents. The final score 94-15.
The 94 goals is the most by NWU, but was still four short of the 98 UP-Tuks piled up against the University of Johannesburg in 2014.
