Superb bowling and level heads from the Cape side inflicted a first defeat for the defending champions, UP-Tuks. In one of the shocks of the tournament, Maties defeated Tuks by nine wickets, reaching their target with five overs to spare.
It was bad news from the get-go for the defending champions, losing their opener for a royal duck in the first ball of the match off the bowling of Kyle Simmonds.
Brandon Glover had the ball in the second over and the seamer wasted no time in dismissing Tuks batsman, Evan Jones, who tried to pull one that was short of a length. The ball flew high in the air, and the Maties keeper took a comfortable catch in the end.
In the same over Glover got his second wicket, this time getting the batsman to edge one through to the keeper. By this time Tuks were in deep trouble at 11/5 after just four overs.
Claassen and Schraader attempted to dry up the steady flow of lost wickets and patched up the innings, reaching 30/5. But soon enough Schraader edged one to the keeper and Tuks were six wickets down.
Claassen was then joined by Arendse and they took the score to 79/6 before Claassen was dismissed by the spin of Simmonds. Tuks were now 79/7.
Maties’ Botha got rid of Van Rooyen with a good catch off his own bowling and it became clear that Tuks were never going to reach 100 runs.
The Power Plus over was forced on Tuks and after being 90/9 at one stage, they lost wickets at the death and finished their innings on 82 all out.
Maties’ run chase was steady. After the loss of opener Vasconcelos off the bowling of Claassen, captain Bredenkamp and No. 3 batsman Bedingham got together and steered the ship home without much trouble from UP-Tuks.
Maties reached the target with just the one wicket down and inside 15 overs. They didn’t just defeat the defending champions, they did it with a bonus point, leaving with maximum points. The champions were humbled by a rising Maties side.
