Young athletes looking to start their season on the right foot will have another chance to sign up for a three-day summer coaching clinic presented by NMMU Madibaz Athletics Club.
The clinic, which takes place at Kirkwood High School from January 14 to 16, is set to offer expert coaching from some of the Eastern Cape’s top track and field trainers.
Madibaz athletics manager Nellis Bothma said the invitation had been extended to all schools in the province as well as individual athletes and that places were still available.
“It’s not just for athletes however. Coaches who attend the clinic will also receive specialised instruction and a course certificate.”
Bothma said the university’s aim was to provide top-level coaching to help develop young sporting talent.
“We want to equip both the athletes and their coaches to take what we teach them and build on that for seasons to come.”
He said it was a particular privilege to have jumps coach Jenny Kingwill, who joins the Madibaz’s ranks for the upcoming season, sharing her expertise at the event.
Kingwill was the guiding hand behind Ruswahl Samaai’s bronze medal in the long jump at both the Commonwealth Games and African championships in 2014.
On the track, Madibaz sprints coach Gerrie Posthumus will assist young speedsters, while Leonardo de Villiers and Karel Gerber will handle the middle-distance and hurdles specialists.
Young attendees could also look forward to seeing some of their Madibaz heroes in action, said Bothma.
“We’ve got our national U23 champion Ischke Senekal helping out in the shot put, while Garth Ellis, who took bronze at the SA champs, will lend a hand in the high jump.”
He said Madibaz coaches Kobus van Zyl and Vernon Oosthuizen would round out the offering with instruction in the discus and javelin.
Registration costs R100 per person and includes lunch and refreshments on the Thursday and Friday.
Out-of-town athletes will be housed at the school hostel. Accommodation and meals cost an additional R280 per person for two nights.
