The unsung heroes of most hockey teams and ready to step up to the plate on Monday evening, as the two Varsity Hockey finalists for 2018 are decided.
While the strikers bang in the goals, drag-flicking their way to glory; it’s the goalkeepers who keep their sides in the match. And in Varsity Hockey they have an additional responsibility to typical matches.
With no draws in Varsity Hockey, matches move to a penalty shootout, but instead of the traditional p-flicks, players need to attempt to dribble past the goalkeeper in an 8-second window.
It leaves the keeper with a massive decision to make and defending these attacks is a skill.
Kovsies keeper LouFrans Esterhuizen shows us how to most effectively approach the task.
Could this be the difference as we decide the top two?
