University of Fort Hare were looking to redeem themselves after last week’s performance against Tshwane University of Technology.
University of Fort came out guns blazing as they took immediate control of the game by going on the attack. UFH scored as early as the second minute of the game, thanks to Andile Batyi. But University of Johannesburg defender, Samuel Warder, went on the counter attack and scored a goal in the 11th minute to level the game.
UJ went on the offensive and were soon rewarded in the 24th minute, when they took a 2-1 lead. Just seven minutes later Dane Fortuin, extended UJ’s lead to 3-1 with a brilliant volley. UJ were awarded a corner on the stroke of half time and found the back of the net with a spectacular header by Katlego Ntsabeleng, ending the first half with the score at 4-1.
UFH seemed to be focusing on their attack in the second half, as they tried to create opportunities for themselves to get back into the match, but the boys from UJ weren’t letting up. UFH were awarded a penalty when a UJ defender fouled Andile Batyi in the box. Bathandwa Zondani stepped up, but the penalty was saved by Mpumelelo Sambo.
Andile Batyi grabbed his second goal of the match with just a few minutes remaining, making the score 4-2. But UJ held possession for the final few minutes, as time wasn’t on the side of UFH. The referee blew the whistle, ending the game at UJ 4-2 UFH. It’s a disappointing end for the boys from University of Fort Hare as they lost their last match of the Varsity Football competition, leaving them at the bottom of the table.
